Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Officers report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.

Police then found numerous other smeared cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police say preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any harm in association with the incident," they commented.

City officials said they were working "to resolve the case" and have requested to the community for details.

A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism left him without words and needed to be solved quickly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
