Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
