The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team might be building a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
