The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
